How do I compare the total monthly cost?

Do not compare headline rent alone. Ask each owner for:

• the rent and its basis (per person, per room or for the whole apartment);
• the deposit and what it covers;
• how electricity and other utilities are billed;
• transport costs;
• internet and laundry, if relevant.
